Voyage aboard Orontes in May 1954
R.M.S. ORFORD
R.M.S. Orford was Launched at Barrow-in-Furness on 27th September 1927 and sailed on her Maiden Voyage from London to Australia on 13th October 1928. Requisitioned as a Troop Transport in November 1939 she had started on her way from Marseilles to Mombasa when she was attacked and bombed by German aircraft at Marseilles but was able to be beached. Fourteen lives were lost. She was salvaged for breaking up and left Marseilles under tow. Partially demolished by 1944 she was finally scrapped in August 1947. (Michael Ian Byard Collection)
